Improve Your Diet Through Mindful Eating!

It isn’t often that we stop to think about what we're
eating. Wmindfulith so many food options available to us on a daily basis it seems that it has become more of a habit to eat rather than a necessity!

Unfortunately, with an excess amount of options there are so many unhealthy, sugar filled foods that have now become a part of our everyday eating routine.  We are also bombarded with constant distractions like tv and cellphones that pull our attention away from our eating habits making us forget that we are munching and in turn causing us to over eat.  With that in mind - if you are looking to improve your eating habits or lose weight,
it is important to remember one thing:

One of the most effective yet simple ways to improve your diet is to be mindful of the foods you are eating.

What Does it Mean to Eat Mindfully?

Mindful eating encourages you to pay full attention to your eating experience both in and out of the body. By doing so you can be fully conscious of the effects certain foods have on your body and therefore your overall well-being.  Once you recognize these effects it makes it easier to call out your unhealthy eating habits and start replacing them with healthier ones!

Questions You Should Ask Yourself Before & While You Eat:

  • Why do I feel hungry?
  • Is what I’m eating good for my health?
  • How does this food taste, smell and feel?
  • How full was I before I ate, how full am I now?

It’s important to put aside time for yourself to eat without any outside distractions so you are able to focus on the task at hand. By solely focusing on eating you will be able to answer the above questions with a clearer mind making it easier to assess your reactions to what you are eating. By doing so you will enjoy your food more, learn to eat slower and in doing so the sensation of fullness will become more apparent as it takes a while for the body to understand that it is full.

By eating mindfully you will not only learn to eat only when you are genuinely hungry and stop when you are full but you will genuinely enjoy the taste of food but more importantly – you will learn to enjoy the taste of healthy food! After assessing the effects that both healthy and unhealthy foods have on your mind and body you will begin to realize that unhealthy foods are not as great tasting as you once thought and you will notice that junk food does not make you feel nearly as good as other healthier options.

With that said, here are some basic guidelines to follow when looking for healthy snacks and a small list of great snacking options!
